This project consists of the installation of a fiber optic system along with upgrades to all 42 traffic signals in the City. During 2016 construction began on a fiber optic system throughout the City. With the fiber optic system installed the City’s 42 traffic signals will be upgraded to use the system providing more options with signal timing improving the flow of traffic and reducing delay. Work includes replacing traffic signal controllers, school flasher controllers, installing new school flasher control program, installing two battery backup systems and installing six pan-tilt-zoom cameras. The project also includes retrofitting all pedestrian pushbuttons and pedestrian signal heads to meet new MUTCD and ADA standards as well as replacing all traffic signal heads and lenses with LED lenses. In addition, the current emergency preemption system will be replaced with a new GPS emergency preemption system that will be much more reliable for the Police and Fire Departments decreasing response times and improving safety.
Traffic Impacts and Timing:
- Traffic will be maintained during the project construction with occasional lane closures. The project is expected to be complete by Fall 2018.
- The project has been delayed due to unexpected delay with Duke Energy permit.
